Americans and Campaign Finance Reform

In a 2013 Gallup poll entitled “Half in U.S. Support Publicly Financed Federal Campaigns”, it was found that a majority of Americans would support publicly funded campaigns. This support was, for the most part, pretty evenly distributed throughout different genders and age groups with only slight differences in the percent who would support campaign finance.

The biggest divide in the numbers was that 60 percent of Democrats would support the measure while only 41 percent of Republicans would. This shows the partisan divide in America more than anything else.

However, when the less controversial idea of limiting campaign financing was proposed, much more people were in support of this. This demonstrates that most Americans would be in favor of some kind of change to the system.

I think that this is the current issue with campaign finance reform. People are trying to change the whole system at once and that is just not possible. The likeliness of finding a solution that most Americans would support or agree with is very low considering that the country does not agree on most issues anyways.

The best way to approach this issue is by informing the public on the current system and then proposing solutions. After all, according to this poll a majority of Americans would support changing the current system, even if it is only slightly.

There has to be some kind of change and immediate drastic change is not possible with our current political system let alone our current political environment. The best course of action is to start informing the public and giving them actual options on how to change things, not just saying that the system is messed up. We know the system is messed up, now it is just about how to fix it.
